What is Social Art? | Building an Experimental Artist Residency in a Factory
🏭 Support and join the community: www.patreon.com/veryprivateart
Imagine having the opportunity to join an artist residency within a manufacturing firm in Beijing, where you can collaborate directly with the workers on a unique art project. We're excited to share our interview with Alessandro Orlandi, who will delve into his experiences with this innovative project and discuss the broader implications of social art. Join us to explore the intersection of creativity and industrial environments through his insightful perspectives.
The Social Sensibility Research and Development (R&D) Department represents a pioneering artist-led initiative situated within the bustling factory of Bernard Controls, a French manufacturing firm in Beijing, China. Twice a week, artists are welcome to share their time and knowledge with the company's vibrant community of nearly 100 workers, turning them into art users.
This innovative project was conceived 13 years ago through a meeting between artist Alessandro Rolandi and Guillaume Bernard, the COO of Bernard Controls, and has flourished ever since. All the participation is completely voluntary, and the works belong to the creators themselves. I believe this initiative stands as a compelling blueprint for socially engaged art practices.

Hello! Do you think it is more difficult for a male artist who has not yet prospered with his work to find a partner than for a female artist? Could it be that accomplished women reject him for not having stability and do not value his talent or potential? All the best!

It’s not all about money Immediate successs is hard to come by The art market is very small and it’s lost its essence due to money and let’s face it all the art pieces that have sold for huge $ are not always displayed They’re all stored away in Europe because people can’t afford to insure them, correct? There are only a few key players and galleries in the world Art is a passion it’s not necessarily there to make money that’s a huge bonus if you can obviously but that’s not the essence and I think a lot of people only think about the dollars and then their work becomes very slick & commercial and they suffer turning out the same old work as they don’t take any risk and don’t grow as an artist - nothing evolves - this desert residency looks great and helps to give you the peace and freedom to experience and experiment in a unique environment. Would love to go perhaps one day!

This video was amazingly helpful, I’ll follow you forever and I have tons to watch, 您是我新的英雄,非常感谢! 🙏 Please would you be able to provide advise for me with a question relatively specific to my case? I want to write my resumes as a relatively experienced graphic designer, pattern designer, and illustrator. People online suggest that it’s ok to include your personal website* on your resume, but in my case, “my personal website” (aside of an Artstation portfolio that I plan to include as well) is mainly a shop of my prints, is it advisable to add it to my resume? or do you think it would put employers off because it may “scare” them by making them think this is what I’d do for them? (somebody already said that my stuff is “scary”). Having your input would be incredibly helpful, probably life saving as I’m really searching for a stable position, I’m so done depending on freelancing!

Is annoyinh that i need money to invest in everything i need to put my art out there. In the old day you had talent and some rich person would gladly pay you to paint their homes, make portraits, maybe even the church would have you do their art. But that doesnt happen no more, i used yo paint murals but people didn't pay ,it was hard to get he second half from them very often.the rich people do not invest in art. Im trying to sell prints and stickers from my art but only broke people buy. They pick one little thing out of all my stuff. How can people get ahead if no one is actually buying? People need you to get succesfu and famou to look at you and appreciate you. It sucks to bee poor. I see rich people just purchase nice printers and all kinds of machines to do trendy stuff but im always a few light years behind because i live paycheck by paycheck.

Art has no age! When we look to a beautiful art work, we don't think about the age of the artist who made it! But we would love to know about the artist, their techniques and other artworks, their personality, their personal experience, how they become artists, their challenges and stories they went through in their journey, etc Age is instead important in moving from a stable job to any "new business" as business building requires to have financial savings to live on while setting the business (any business not only art) and wait for the required time for the business to become lucrative. Having a part time job or a full time one will help in reducing the financial risks and this can apply to anyone starting a new business and in any domain. Art is not about age. And if I get to know that a certain beatiful art is made by a late bloomer, that artist becomes more precious to me !! If certain gallaries may refuse fome artists because of their age or their starting age in the art industry, there may exist also other galleries who will do the opposite. Moreover, online galleries and online presence (website, social media, groups, forums,..) are also another alternative!

@VeryPrivateGallery Thank you for this amazing video, I do really need it since I made the lip recently from office work to start my creative business and persue my art career, my childhood dream now that I'm more than 40!! One thing that really surprized me here is your experiece in some European restaurants! I found it was very rude from those people to think you are a waitress! This proves that they lack the ability to see and observe and they just behave according to their own "false" stereotypes like a troop lacking any kind of "consciousness" and "awareness"!! Such people must make more effort to grow and improve their mentality! This has really surprised me and I wanted to leave a note here just in case someone from the same "stereotype background" came to read it. I'm not an Asian nor a European. Besides, "humblness" is not the quality of many people... Thank you so much for this video, really informative. You are great! Keep shining 😊🫶🌍.

Great video tutorial. Glad I found you. I created a 13 minute compilation of my paintings and illustrations, with music on my mac computer in 2021. It's like a movie with animation and I have never shown it to a mass audience. I want to create a You Tube Channel to launch this movie about my art. But I want to grab people's interest immediately and begin with the movie, which ends with credits. What do you suggest? Should I open it with my face talking about what I am about to present? Should I end with my face talking about what I have just presented, or go faceless and not talk at all?

How to get into a gallery instructions from a gallerist per this video: "You have to learn this yourself" "Establish yourself" "Figure it out through experience" Also "I don't care about your art education" and "make a CV and list who you've studied under" are directly conflicting statements This is what gatekeeping is

  • @calebplumleeoutdoors

Regarding the "art buyback" idea. I know an artist who doesn't buy their art back, but WILL allow the customer to bring it back and the artist will RESELL it for a negotiated commission. No cost to the artist, but the buyer gets THE best representative to sell it again.

  • @calebplumleeoutdoors

Reminder that galleries take 40-60%... your art is worth what someone is willing to pay. Galleries want someone who is ALREADY successfully selling art (and likely don't need galleries anymore) Don't get discouraged. Most famous artists (before social media) made a rich friend or contact that bought a piece for lots of money and then talked about it with other art collectors... thats it. Thats the secret. That or money laundering. Lots of that too

interesting logical advice, especially in regards to pricing particularly how the so much space costing so much money it defiantly doesn't work well when you get down to the smaller sizes your not making any money at all if your selling through somewhere which takes commission out the sale... also finding a fair price was a good point... building it seems building a group of collectors or following and then directing to a website would probably be a better outcome long term but then you also have website fees to contend with...
